New Orleans Accessible Information
New Orleans has a rich history, culture, and is
home to many a resilient people. Improvements to streets, passageways, curb
cuts, signage and transportation remain a principle focus of the city's rebuilding
efforts. Even with many infrastructure enhancements in recent years, combinations
of historical architecture along with strained resources for rebuilding make
accessibility a challenge, but not a complete barrier. The French Quarter, with
its narrow stone and brick streets and numerous of shops, restaurants and taverns,
is a challenge to navigate. Many buildings have steps and narrow passageways
and the sidewalks are not always entirely even. Curb cuts exist on almost every
corner, and while many buildings do have one step, many shops do not. Most doorways
have double doors, so that a normally narrow passage can be opened up to accommodate
a wheelchair. Accessible bathrooms are a challenge and more easily found in
the larger hotels.
Ground Transportation
-
New Orleans provides a number of excellent modes
of transportation to help you navigate the city. Use the lnks below to find
the best one that suits your travel needs. One great spot for wheelchair
accessibility is Magazine Avenue. This street borders the Garden District,
and is a shopping and dining area. A wheelchair-accessible city bus runs
its length and several blocks of wide, new concrete sidewalks exist with
excellent curb cuts.
- Bus
Service - New Orleans Regional Transit Authority (NORTA)
- All standard RTA buses contain features and equipment that allow disabled
riders to board, ride, and get out of vehicles easily and comfortably.
The red streetcars that travel the Canal Street and Riverfront lines are
also accessible to disabled riders. The green streetcars that travel the
St. Charles Avenue line are not accessible to disabled riders. Modification
of these historic streetcars is limited and requires consultation with
and the prior approval of the State Historic Preservation Office. For
more information, please visit thier website at www.norta.com/accessibility/Riding_with_Disabilities
or call (504) 248-3900.
